More than 320 species of hummingbirds inhabit North, Central, and South America. Seventeen species nest in the United States alone, and seven of those inhabit the Las Vegas area. But only one Black-chinned Hummingbird chose to nest on the back porch of Las Vegas residents Noriko and Don Carroll.When Noriko and Don Carroll moved from New York City to suburban Las Vegas, they found a tiny nest on a clothesline on their back porch. As the Carrolls settled into their new home, so did a female hummingbird they named Honey. SunBird's First flight!

A few days ago i was just hoping to see the little one’s first flight, but it was just an optimistic thinking as this event could have happen anytime: i might not be around, or am around but not having the camera waiting.. but i got lucky. Then one morning a few days ago, I wanted to take some more feeding shot.. after the little one was fed, it began climbing up and pushing itself up… but he did this before, i took a shot anyway, then he pushed more of his body out and Ploof!.. he just few off! I was so excited I thought I might have missed shooting the flight. luckily I caught most of his body..

It isn’t a spectacular shot but you know this kind of moment for me is really cool for me because of the chances are slim and if i missed this it would take another year, and who knows if they’ll build another nest on my balcony again. anyway, i’m really happy to see this cute sunbird family from the very start till this fist flight, and i hope they come back :))

now i can clean up the balcony a bit.. maybe stick a new ‘living’ plant there 😀

i’m actually glad that this contact photos is finally working again. When it used to work I said to myself, oh, i’ll catch up later, not enough time now. end up never did. now that it went missing a while, i was actually excited to go visit contact list 😀 .. once again, don’t know what you’ve got till its gone.

One of nature’s smallest birds, a Black-chinned Hummingbird, built her nest on a clothesline in a backyard in Las Vegas. The clothesline happened to belong to a team of documentary filmmakers, Noriko and Don Carroll, authors of the highly acclaimed book, First Flight: A Mother Hummingbird’s Story (Andrews McMeel Publishing). This enchanting and remarkably detailed nature film reveals the tireless efforts of mom hummingbird, who the Carrolls named Honey, as she furbished her tiny nest with delicate spider web and soft plant fibers to prepare for arrival of her eggs.
